At AusGenealogy we keep a close eye on new collections - both Australian and
UK-based. We subscribe to a number of sources so we're able to search these
collections online for those elusive records.

Write down what you already know about your family. Start with
yourself, work backwards to your parents, grandparents etc. Use the
blank 'Pedigree Chart'. To add detail to each family - use the
blank 'Family Group Sheet'.
Compulsory civil registration was introduced at different times
in Australia and in England. Prior to civil registration you need to
look in parish records. Some parish registers have not survived.
Census records in England provide more information about family
groups and occupations. Census data is available for 1841-1911.
Personal census information in Australia was destroyed after each
census. Newspaper clippings, cemetery headstones, wills, land
records, directories, telephone books and other data sources add to
the picture of each family group.
This depends on how much you already know about your families and
how far you want to extend your tree - ie how many generations. Some
people just want help to get them started then they continue on from

Most people prefer to use a computer programme specially designed
for genealogy. There are many applications available including free
programmes. We can help you get started in this area.
