How do I get started?

Write down what you already know about your family. Start with yourself, work backwards to your parents, grandparents etc. Use the blank  'Pedigree Chart'. To add detail to each family - use the blank 'Family Group Sheet'.

What about really early events - in the 1700s and early 1800s?

Compulsory civil registration was introduced at different times in Australia and in England. Prior to civil registration you need to look in parish records. Some parish registers have not survived.

What other records are available?

Census records in England provide more information about family groups and occupations. Census data is available for 1841-1911. Personal census information in Australia was destroyed after each census. Newspaper clippings, cemetery headstones, wills, land records, directories, telephone books and other data sources add to the picture of each family group.

How much does it cost to create a family tree?

This depends on how much you already know about your families and how far you want to extend your tree - ie how many generations. Some people just want help to get them started then they continue on from there. The best idea is to contact us for a quote. See the 'Services' page for more information.

How do I keep track of all the information?

Most people prefer to use a computer programme specially designed for genealogy. There are many applications available including free programmes. We can help you get started in this area.
